Made in the tradition of the ancient Egyptians from the pith of the papyrus plant, hydrated pieces are layered in parallel strips followed by another layer perpendicular to the first. Dark papyrus is "aged" in water longer than "light" papyrus to achieve a darker sheet. Papyrus is suitable for painting, writing with inks, and bookbinding. Egyptians considered it the "everlasting" paper because it has been found in perfect condition in tombs dating back to 2700 B.C.
