*Eve Aranoff

Eve recently competed in Top Chef on Bravo. She attended Le Cordon Bleu in Paris, France, and graduated with diplomas in French Cuisine and Wine and Spirits in 1999. She has worked in the restaurant industry for 20 years, progressing from prep cook to line cook, from sous chef to chef de cuisine and executive chef.

Randy Asplund
Randy is a part-time lecturer and full-time manuscript calligrapher, illuminator & illustrator with over 20 years of experience. He is an internationally renowned consultant on medieval manuscript production and is currently deep in the writing and illustration of a book about how medieval books were made.
Lynn Avadenka
Lynne founded Land Marks Press in 1981, which produces limited edition books for writers and poets, and was a recent recipient of a book arts grants from the NEA to study abroad.  She has taught for many years including workshops at the Center for the Book Arts in NYC, the Penland School, and the College for Creative Studies in Detroit.  Her work is in the British Library, the Library of Congress and many private collections.  For more go to www.landmarkspress.com

Cathleen Baker

Ruth Bardenstein
Ruth  received her MFA in Graphic Design and Installation; involved in book arts since 1994 and is a "GrandMaster" of the Hollanders School of Book and Paper Arts. received

Jean Buescher Bartlett
Jean received her MFA in Book Arts from the University of Alabama in 1989. In her studio and bindery in Ann Arbor's Old West Side she produces limited edition, letterpress printed, illustrated books. Jean also teaches at the College for Creative Studies in Detroit as well as at the Penland School in North Carolina. Galen Berry
Galen is a full-time, professional marbler and has taught workshops for over 18 years all around the country.  He does work for many of the country's top bookbinders and has sold his papers in stores and shops nationwide, including at Hollander's  The Smithsonian and Library of Congress have commissioned his marbled papers.  Nicknamed the Medieval Marbler, he estimates hes has taught over 3,500 students in 23 states.
*Marge Biancke
Since 1985, Marge has written the Kitchen Mailbox column for the AA News. She has taught cooking classes for the AA School System's extension Dept. and for many years gave cooking demonstrations at Kitchen Port, eventually becoming their demonstration coordinator. Marge has taken classes at LaVarenne in Paris and from Anne Willan and Jacques Pepin.

Barbara Brown
Barbara is a local artist and teacher.  She has studied fine binding and the book arts for over 15 years, including studies at the American Academy of Bookbinding in Telluride.  She is active in the arts community and currently exhibits her works at the Washington Street Gallery in Ann Arbor where she is currently curating a book arts exhibit.
 
Darcy Bowden
Darcy has a MFA in studio art/textiles. She is an accomplished printmaker and her work is exhibited nationally.  She has taught high school art at Ann Arbor Huron High School for over 25 years.
Jon Buller
Jon is a professional bookbinder and founder and owner of the Bessenberg Bindery in Ann Arbor for the past 25 years.  His specialties include traditional leather bindings, custom bindings, and the repair and restoration of valuable books.

*Isaiah Campbell
Born and raised in Ann Arbor, Isaiah has grown up with a passion for cooking. Currently he is a chef at the Pacific Rim in Ann Arbor. After many years as a short order cook, he attended a baking trade school and was a baker for Whole Foods. He believes in food as art and enjoys the presentation aspect of serving a meals.

Susan Goethel Campbell
Susan has a MFA in printmaking from Cranbrook Academy of Art. She has taught printmaking, drawing and studio art at the College for Creative Studies for 15 years and has her work in many permanent collections including the National Museum of Women in the Arts, the Toledo Museum of Arts and the Detroit Institute of Arts.
Judith Cattran
Judith, along with having taken many classes at Hollander’s over the years, has a Masters in Education and 35 years of teaching experience in elementary and middle schools.

Jane Cloutier
Jane is a self taught artist and former botanical illustrator; her recent paper sculptures have won awards in juried show around Michigan.
Jim Craven
Jim is a master bookbinder, document restoration specialist, and head conservator at the University of Michigan's Bentley Historical Library. Jim has been bookbinding at UM since 1949. He was recently honored as the Community Book Award recipient at the Kerrytown BookFest.

Harvest Crittenden
Harvest is a highly accomplished lettering artist and calligraphy instructor. She is a past president of the Michigan Assocociation of Calligraphers and owns her own lettering arts business, Acorn Arts.

Phil Driscoll

Phil has been a letterpress printer for 35 years.  In his business, he casts type and has the largest collection of type casting molds in the country with over 3,000 sets molds for making printing type.  Phil is an active member in the Michigan Letterpress Guild.

Vicki Engling
Vicki has a BFA in photography from Sienna Heights.  She spent two years traveling the country teaching book making on Arttrain USA.  She has taught classes at Hollander's, mostly to young adults and is a former manager at Hollander's.
Donna Engstrom
Donna is an award wining mixed media artist and teacher.  Her focus is teaching altered book workshops and other art classes including collage, drawing, color & design.  She was the former owner of Creative Side Art Supply in Brighton, Michigan.  You can visit her website at www.donna-engstrom-abstract-art.com
Daniel Essig
Daniel is a full-time studio artist in Asheville, North Carolina, where he is also a member of Ariel Gallery, a contemporary craft cooperative. and exhibits his works and teaches nationally.  He is renowned for his impressive sculptural books and is currently featured on the cover of the “Penland Book of Handmade Books”.  For more information about Daniel, visit his website at www.danielessig.com
Don Etherington
Don is the founder of the Etherington Conservation Center in North Carolina. His fine bindings have won international acclaim, and with 55 years of experience, he is uniquely qualified as an extraordinary bookbinder, conservator, and teacher.  He has been involved with the restoration of the Magna Carta, Constitution, and the Declaration of Independence. Currently he teaches conservation for the American Academy of Bookbinding which offers workshops at Hollander's.
Diane Stum Fekete
Diane is a lettering artist and instructor and was a founding board member and past president of the International Association for the Calligraphic Arts.  She has taught calligraphy at Hollander’s since 1995.
Gillian Ferrington
Gillian is a teacher at Emerson Elementary School in Ann Arbor, Michigan.  She is inspired by her collection of birds and her appreciation of gardens and insects.  She demonstrates goykatu (fish printing) to kids of all ages every year at the Kerrytown BookFest.

Ann Flowers
Ann has worked at the University of Michigan's Bentley Historical Library for over 25 years.  He current position is  Associate Archivist and is a book conservation and preservation specialist.

*Smita Govil 
Smita been teaching Indian cooking classes for many years including at Kitchen Port when they were in Kerrytown. Her specialty is authentic Northern Indian Cuisine, which is quite different than in South India.

*Barb Gibson
Barb is a regular fixture at the Ann Arbor Farmers’ Market, selling biscotti under the name The Biscotti Factory. She has over 20 varieties including a new line called “Savory Sticks”. A long time successful clay artist she finds a soothing parallel in kneading both clay and dough.

*Francesca Girarraffa
Francesca was born and raised in Naples Italy. Her aunt had a famous restaurant in Milan, and Francesca used to spend her summers working there, learning how to cook authentic southern Italian food. Since 2003, Francesca has been teaching Italian cooking in her home and for Ann Arbor Rec & Ed as well as at Washtenaw Community College. Website: www.casadicesca.com

Norm Harris
Norm is a bookbinder and book repair specialist at the Preservation Division of the University of Michigan Library.  He has been there for the past 10 years and prior to that worked at the Bessenberg Bindery in Ann Arbor. Norm teaches in-house library book repair workshops at U of M.
Tom & Cindy Hollander
Tom and Cindy are the owners of Hollander’s, opening their store in Kerrytown in 1991.  Along with running their store, they have taught many workshops in their specialties of box making, bookbinding, and making a wide variety of desk accessories.
Jim Horton
Jim is a printmaker, wood engraver, and long-time art teacher.  His wood engravings have won many awards and he is an expert at historical letterpress equipment and printing.
Karen Izenberg
Karen has a BA in Art History and MFA in Painting & Textile Art.  Most recently her focus has been on collage arts.  She has also owned an art studio/gallery in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

Renée Jarmolowicz
Renee has been teaching art teacher and educator for over 25 years.  She is accomplished at the lettering and book arts, as well as drawing and mixed-media art forms. Her award winning work can be found in many national and international exhibits as well as private collections.  She is the owner of the Artist Alcove, specializing in contemporary abstract calligraphy, mixed-media works on paper, and artist books.

*Nanci Jenkins
Nanci has been a cooking instructor in Ann Arbor for over 25 years. She currently works at Spice Merchants in Kerrytown. Her cooking experience includes teaching for Cuisinart, Calphalon, Kitchen Port, and at the University of Toledo. She describes herself as a foodie with a passion to share the delights cooking can bring to the home cook.

Alvey Jones
Alvey is a full time artist,and his works are shown locally and nationally. He has won numerous awards as painter and book artist. He is an exhibiting member of the WSG Gallery in Ann Arbor.

*John Jonna
John is co-owner of Vinology Wine Bar and Restaurant and a co-founder of the Merchant of Vino wine shops. Has served on the Michigan Grape Council and has traveled extensively in Europe studying food and wine.

*Elizabeth Marcano Kennedy
Originally from Venezuela, Elizabeth cherishes the cooking she did while growing up and enjoys cooking using many of the original recipes she learned. She also enjoys experimenting with a variety of other South American cuisine. Her self-taught skills have been advanced with formal training in baking and pastry confection, at Washtenaw Community College.

*Amanda Klain 
Owner of Love Fresh, a local Ann Arbor business that promotes, practices and teaches the art of eating and living for health and happiness. Her passion for healthy food and limitless capacity for creativity in the kitchen makes her classes inspiring and enjoyable.

Hedi Kyle
Hedi Kyle recently retired as Head Conservator at the American Philosophical Society, and continues teaching as Adjunct Professor at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, where she teaches book structures to MFA students of the Graduate Program in Book Arts and Printmaking. Equally at home in the fields of conservation and the book arts, these fields have greatly infuenced her work and cross fertilized each other. Her one-of-a-kind constructions have been exhibited internationally, and are in private and public collections. She is co-founder of Paper and Book Intensive (PBI).

Monique Lallier

Monique is internationally recognized as a major award-winning design bookbinder and book artist. For 12 years she was the Chairman of the Standards of Excellence of the Guild of Book Workers. John Mackrell
John is a long time student of book conservation and fine binding and currently assists Don Etherington when he teaching American Academy of Bookbinding conservation workshops at Hollander's.

Jean McCormick
Jean was trained in bookbinding and conservation in England Czech Republic and American Academy of Bookbinding.  She has conducted bookbinding for teachers workshops.

*Rita Conroy-Martin
Owner of The Sage Dish, a personal chef service that offers cooking classes and in-home meal services. Rita is also a vendor at the Ann Arbor Farmers’ Market in the fall offering French style savory quiche and seasonal fruit tarts. With a Masters degree in Holistic Nutrition, she is passionate about teaching the health and economic benefits of using local, seasonal, organic, and non GMO ingredients in all of her dishes. Cynthia May
Cynthia is a mixed media specialist and has been an art educator for over 15 years. She is an active member in the International Society of Altered Book Artists. Cynthia is also an avid weaver and fiber artist and often merges the crafts with her bookmaking.

*Wendy Mead
Wendy is an avid cook and a proponent of making easy, economical, and healthy style comfort foods. She regularly shops at the Ann Arbor Farmers’ Market and is an advocate of cooking with fresh and local ingredients.

Chela Metzger
Chela is a librarian, bookbinder and book conservator currently teaching full-time at the University of Texas. Her work in Latin America has fostered a strong interest in Spanish and Islamic-influenced bindings. She has taught workshops at the Paper and Book Intensive as well as at other schools around the country.

Julia Miller
Julia has an MA in Historical Archives and is the past senior conservator at the University of Michigan Conservation & Book Repair Lab. As an active book artist, she is heavily influenced by the structural and decorative elements she finds as she studies historical bindings. She continues to work in private practice and recently has taught at the Paper and Book Intensive.

Susan Mills
Susan is a bookbinder who has had her own boindery since 1990. She teaches traditional bookbinding workshops, many with an histroical slant. She teaches at the Center for the Book in NYC and the Nova Scotia School of Art and Design. Her works are found in many libraries and institutions throughout the United States and Canada.

*Lakshmi Narayanan
Lakshmi was born and raised in India. She enjoys cooking for
company and has taught classes at Kitchen Port, as well as hands-on workshops as fund raisers. Many of her recipes are simplified versions of traditional ones and some are tried and true favorites from her favorite Indian cookbooks.

Karen O’Neal
Karen is a local multi-media artist and has taught many workshops in papermaking.  In addition, she is also accomplished at making papyrus.  Her studio, Out of Hand Papermaking Studio, is located in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Karen is also an avid cook and has been making great gingerbread houses for over 30 years.

Chad Pastotnik
Chad has a BFA, printmaking and established Deep Wood Press in 1992, located in Marcelona, Michigan. He publishes limited edition, hand-bound, fine press books that are letterpress printed and illuminated by original intaglio, wood engraving, and linocut prints.
 

*Thais Anne Peterson
The ultimate foodie: a chef, a cooking teacher, a food writer, and most importantly an enthusiastic student and lover of food, wine, and cooking. She was employed as the demonstration chef for many years at Busch’s in Ann Arbor, sharing recipes and answering thousands of questions on food and cooking.

*Elle Preston
Culinary instructor, executive chef and owner of The Traveling Palate, Elle’s cooking is influenced by a melting pot of cultures including Hispanic, Cajun, Creole, Armenian and Italian flavors. She has worked as a private chef and as a food industry consultant and is now living in Ann Arbor. Marilyn Prucka
Marilyn has a BFA in printmaking and an MFA in Textiles. She has done collographs for over 20 years and currently is an exhibiting artist at the Washington Street Gallery in Ann Arbor.

Benjamin Reynaert
Ben graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design. He recently interned for the Center for Book Arts in New York City, and is apprenticing with Bloodroot Press in Ann Arbor, Michigan.  He also works full-time on the staff at Hollander’s and is currently the workshop coordinator.

Ann Ridout
Ann is a recently retired bookbinder and book repair specialist at the Preservation Division of the University of Michigan Library.  With over 35 years of experience, she has taught countless book repair workshops.

*Marcia Rockwood
Marcia is the innkeeper at the Ann Arbor Farmhouse Bed and Breakfast. She enjoys traveling and cooking, using original and revamped recipes that she has collected from around the world.

*Brigitte Romero
Brigitte was born and raised near Paris, France and comes from a family of caterers, pastry chefs, and chocolate crafters. She loves sharing the joys of a beautiful French dinner experience. Owner of France Cuisine, a personal chef service in Ann Arbor.

*John Savanna
John is the fourth generation of owners of Millpond Bread in Chelsea. He is a regular vendor at the Ann Arbor Farmers’ Market and enjoys teaching bread making classes at his bakery. His breads use stone-ground flour and all organic ingredients.

Matt Shlian

Matt has a BFA from Alfred University and an MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art.  He currently teaches at the University of Michigan and Washtenaw Community College.  His focus has been in printmaking and sculpture and his unique paper engineering models are widely exhibited in galleries.  He is a designer of pop-up books, toys, cards, and advertisements, and is currently working with a major publisher on a pop-up book.  Visit Matt's website at www.mattshlian.com

Linda Soberman
Linda has a MFA in photography.  She is a photo based, mixed media specialist and exhibits and teaches nationally and internationally.  Linda received the Jewish Women in the Arts Award for lifetime achievement in 2006. Linda also just returned from a month-long artist residency and tour of China, where she was one of 25 invited artists to participate in the First International Printmaking Exhibition and Symposium.

*Peter Stark
Organic farmer who has been using, collecting, and studying herbs and wild plants for forty years. Peter has lectured at Matthai Botanical Gardens and at many other botanical organizations. He is a regular exhibitor at the Ann Arbor Farmer’s Market.

Bonnie Stahlecker
Bonnie has a MFA from the University of Wisconsin with a background in typography, letterpress, and bookbinding.  Bonnie has taught at Penland, Haystack, and at the Paper & Book Intensive.  Bonnie is a highly accomplished and recognized nationally as a book artist.

*Brian Steinberg
Brian is a cooking instructor, avid gardener, fermentation hobbyist, and has produced his own cooking show. He is currently starting a home grown business called Inchworm Microgreens which will offer microgreens to restaurants and friends. When he is not writing for his blog -  astoneeating.wordpress.com, he can be found making home cooked meals at home in Ann Arbor.

*Max and Eli Sussman
Brothers and authors of “Freshman in the Kitchen: From Clueless Cook to Creative Chef", their book is geared towards the beginning cook. While Eli lives in Los Angeles, Max lives in Ann Arbor and is currently a chef at eve’s, in Kerrytown.

*Greg Upshur
Greg was an American Culinary Federation gold medallist in Hot Food Competition, has appeared on the Food Network Channel, claims the most watched spaghetti recipe video on You Tube, and is a food stylist for Hour Magazine. He has also published a book, Path to Magic. Website: www.mustangchef.com.

Tom Veling
Tom is a recently retired engineer from Ford.  He has taken many workshops and is currently the Monday night Open Studio monitor.  He is also a Hollander’s graduate. 

*Yuyang Ye
Yuyang, an accomplished artist, has done many Chinese calligraphy presentations including at Pfizer, local high schools, and Asian Cultural events. Growing up in China, with a father from the south and mother from the north, Yuyang experienced two different styles of Chinese home cooking. She is enthusiastic about teaching how to make not only healthy, but authentic, great tasting Chinese cuisine.
