Hollander's School of Book & Paper Arts


Hollander’s School of Book & Paper Arts is nationally recognized for its offerings of high caliber workshops. The 1,500 sq.ft. space is located directly below the store and offers plenty of work area as well traditional bookbinding and printing equipment.




Hollander's school contains a large workshop area with a glassed atrium above, allowing workshops to be observed from above. Throughout the year, regularly taught workshops include those in the book arts, bookbinding, letterpress printing, paper making, calligraphy, printmaking, and many others. School History

Hollander’s began teaching workshops in 1994, when the first book and paper arts classes were taught in the back of the store. The schedule grew over the years and now the workshops number close to 100 per year. In 2001, Hollander's downstairs location opened and led to an expanded workshop schedule. Over the next few years, Hollander's acquired a variety of bookbinding and letterpress equipment.  In addition many new high-level, "guest" instructors began teaching at Hollander's.  In 2001 the first graduation ceremony was held and currently there are over 130 graduates of Hollanders School of Book & Paper Arts.  Most recently, Hollander's has partnered with the American Academy of Bookbinding, which offers professional level workshops in fine binding and conservation.

Open Studio

Open Studio is available to all currently enrolled students and all graduates of Hollander’s. For using letterpress or other printing equipment, you must have taken a printing workshop at Hollander’s. Additional open studio times are available by appointment. Learn more

Available Equipment

Hollander's has a 40" Jacques board shear, 24" guillotine cutter, two large backing presses, large paper cutters, a large standing press, and many book presses, finishing presses, and sewing frames.  In addition, there is letterpress equipment including a Vandercook Proofing Press, several table top Pilot Presses, a 1870's Pearl Press with foot treadle, over 80 drawers of wood and metal type, a Kwik Print Foil Stamper, and other related equipment. There are also two etching presses available for classes and Open Studio.

The Kerrytown Press

The Kerrytown Press is an authentic working print shop located in Hollander’s School.  Hollander’s offers custom letterpress printing of invitations, announcements, etc., and allows customers to actually do their own printing using Hollander’s equipment. Learn more
